A new program for Toledo Public Schools students will help them get a head start on a career in police or fire operations.
"I'm hoping that we see over the next few years a profound change in locally homegrown Toledo police officers," Toledo Police Chief George Kral said.
The program has been in the works for the last six years.
"PS419" will allow TPS students to get ahead of a career with Toledo Police or Toledo Fire & Rescue departments while they're still in high school. "Some of the things that you would see if you were going into law enforcement or police and fire at Owens, these kids now will take it in high school," Superintendent Romules Durant explained.
Students will be able to enroll in college courses through Owens Community College, then finish their certifications through a two-year post secondary program.
