According to the Toledo Fire & Rescue Department, a majority of fires happen when we're sleeping, and a working smoke alarm can save your life at that moment.
That's why following a recent fatal fire on Ventura Drive, the firefighters and the American Red Cross passed out smoke alarms and gave fire safety lessons to 130 homes in the same area of that recent fire.
Fire moves fast. It can double in size every 30 seconds.
"Homes that do not have working smoke alarms, you're more than twice as likely to die in a fire than in homes that have working smoke alarms," explained Lt. Shubeta, TFRD public education officer. "We're going to just go door to door and we're going to knock on the door and see if they're in need of smoke alarms, and are willing, we're going to go into their home, we're going to install smoke alarms for them if they need, and we're also going to perform a home safety check for them."
