It’s just like a big dorm,” said Michael Kienzle. Kienzle, 23, was explaining life as a volunteer firefighter at the Corvallis Rural Fire Protection District station north of town on Lewisburg Road. The Corvallis Fire Department works with three levels of volunteers, said Chief Roy Emery, but the roles for the ones at Lewisburg are a bit different. Community volunteers serve a minimum of 14 hours per month, resident volunteers are required to serve 120 hours, while the rural resident volunteers at Lewisburg are required to turn in 168 volunteer hours a month. They also live at the station, which has 12 bedrooms. The 12 volunteers take turns cooking, are responsible for all of the housekeeping and they keep the grounds in good shape.
