Vandals opened four fire hydrants in the Bedford area early Monday morning wasting about 150,000 gallons of borough water, Bedford Police Chief Craig Bowman said. About 4 a.m. Monday, there were three opened hydrants in the borough and one opened hydrant in Bedford Township, Bowman said. Bowman is investigating. If suspects are found, Bowman said he would consult the district attorney on charges. “For now, I’m investigating this as basically a theft, depriving the borough of water and obstructing governmental function because it’s possible if firefighters would have needed to pull water out of a hydrant, it could have caused an issue for the fire department.” The hydrants affected in the borough were located at Bedford and Watson streets Bedford and Simpson streets, and Simpson and South Richard streets.
