In a unique joint training initiative, the East Brandywine Fire Company firefighters recently trained members of the entire East Brandywine Police Department in three separate areas of the fire service as a way to assist firefighters on the fire ground. Police Lt. Jeff Yankevich and Deputy Fire Chief Joe Edwards came up with the training idea, and Fire Chief Vince D’Amico identified three areas that he thought would be of great assistance to the fire department. The first training evolution involved teaching police officers how to hook the fire department supply line to the fire hydrant and how to properly “charge” or turn on the hydrant. This supplies the fire engine with water and once it is adequately supplying the engine, the incident commander of the fire emergency can then focus on all other firefighting efforts.
