VIDEO: For this month’s Salute to First Responders, we had the chance to catch up with firefighters at the Kingston/Forty-Fort fire department this afternoon and learn more about their jobs, especially on hot days like today. On average, the Kingston/Forty Fort station will receive around 6,000 calls per year. Most of their volunteers and employees work on a three-day schedule, including one day set aside for training to be kept up to date. The station is unique because they are equipped with both firefighters and EMT’s, with some who are career and some who are volunteer but are always ready to answer the call no matter what the weather is like. “Due to hazards, we still have to wear our personal protective equipment, but we do carry a couple of coolers of cold water on the fire engines, so we do have water readily available” says Assistant Chief Floyd Young.
