The New Castle Fire Department wants the renovate its secondary station. New Castle City Council will discuss the matter this week during its Monday caucus and Thursday voting meeting on whether to apply for a $100,000 municipal grant via the PA State Fire Commissioner’s office. Chief Mike Kobbe said if received, the grant would be used to replace the rubber on the flat roof of the 819 N. Cedar St. station. “It hasn’t been replaced for a long time,” Kobbe said. Kobbe said the city once considered replacing the roof entirely with a gable model, but was too expensive. He added the grant would be used to replace the boilers in the building, which are 26 years old, with central heating and cooling. Kobbe said the cost to put in HVAC would be around $50,000, in comparison to the $65,000 it would cost to replace the boilers.
