VIDEO: Two correctional officers went to the hospital as a precaution after finding an "undefined white powdery substance" at the ACI, according to a Department of Corrections spokesperson.
Public Relations Officer J.R. Ventura said the two officers were checked and cleared by the hospital and have already returned to the prison.
There was a large emergency response to the Cranston prison around 6:30 p.m.
Richard Ferruccio, the president of the Rhode Island Brotherhood of Correctional Officers, said the two officers found the substance in a common area that was accessible to inmates. He said he spoke to them and they didn't have any symptoms of exposure.
The facility is still on lockdown, according to Ventura, as the Cranston Fire Department’s Hazardous Materials unit investigates the matter.
