VIDEO: A brush fire broke out in Newport Tuesday afternoon. Large plumes of smoke were visible from several miles away. The fire happened in the area of Third Street between Admiral Kalbfus Road and Van Zandt Avenue. The fast-moving flames forced evacuations in the area. Homeowners said they were grateful for the firefighters who jumped into action to save their home from the unimaginable. "We could intensely feel the heat from our back deck and my wife and my 3-year-old son got very hot and that's when we knew it was time to go," said Jeff Holden. Within minutes, Holden, his wife and son were packing a bag and heading out the door. Racing to get out as firefighters battled the quick-moving flames just a few feet from his backyard.
