Firefighters knocked down a fire that broke out Saturday at a building on Cranston Street in Providence. The call came in just after 3:45 p.m., and a fire official on scene told 12 News it took crews about 45 minutes to get the flames under control. The three-story building has a business on the first floor and residences on the upper floors. It sustained mostly smoke and water damage, according to the fire official. “There’s a lot of families here, and I feel sad for them. The majority of people lost a lot of things,” said property manager Jay Ocasio. The Red Cross says it assisted 23 adults and three children who are now displaced. Jamie Whewell lives down the street from the building and knows one of the victims. “He’s doing okay its just a big, big scare,” she said. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
