Rescue crews responded Saturday to a small aircraft crash in Narragansett Bay near Quonset State Airport. The crash happened around 3 p.m., according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The agency said the plane was a single-engine Piper PA-24. North Kingstown Fire Chief Scott Kettelle says the plane took off from Quonset this morning and made stops in Massachusetts. On the return flight, the aircraft had engine trouble and hit the water 2000 feet from the Quonset runway. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, two people were on board at the time and were able to swim to a nearby buoy. The DEM marine unit helped bring them to safety. The two adults were transported to Rhode Island Hospital for hypothermia and minor injuries, says Chief Kettelle.
