The Kingsport Fire Department wants to make sure you're prepared in case of an emergency.
The department is giving away free 9-volt batteries for smoke alarms.
Barry Brickey, with the Kingsport Fire Department, says the batteries are available at Kingsport City Hall's Information Desk and at the Kingsport Renaissance Center.
He adds working smoke alarms can be the difference between saving lives -- and a tragedy. "It's very important that people have working smoke alarms inside their home," said Barry Brickey, Kingsport Fire Department, Public Education and Information Officer. "It doubles their chance getting out safely -- and fires now, will actually burn faster, they get to hotter temperatures quicker, and normally, if you do have a home fire, it takes about a minute before it is too late. You need that time to get out and that early warning, so your smoke alarms need to be working properly."
