VIDEO: The Nashville Fire Department has recently added two unique members to its Fire Investigations Team, enhancing its arson investigations. Shanti and Herman are the newest arson K-9 officers joining the force. These specially trained dogs, Shanti, a one-year-old Goldador, and Herman, a two-year-old Yellow Labrador Retriever, are now assisting fire investigations. The two canines are trained to detect accelerants, and will be sniffing out evidence. After a fire is extinguished, Shanti and Herman will assist investigators by identifying areas that require testing for ignitable liquids. “He is certified up to 60 ignitable liquids. Anything from WD-40, rubbing alcohol, gasoline, kerosene, propane he is certified in that,” said John Torzilli, K9 Herman’s handler. “He’s done 2 house fires that we got called out for and he trains everyday.”
