Tractor-trailer nearly gets stuck on Notch Road in Lamoille County, despite new efforts to combat ’stuckages’

VIDEO: Just days after Notch Road reopened for the 2024 season with new measures in place to prevent "stuckages," a commercial vehicle almost became lodged along the narrow mountain roadway. Vermont State Police told NBC5 that a tractor-trailer narrowly avoided becoming the first truck stuck on Vermont Route 108, known locally as Smugglers' Notch or Notch Road, on Thursday morning. The driver was able to get the vehicle off the roadway within a matter of minutes, however. The Vermont Agency of Transportation told NBC5 that the tractor-trailer approached the Notch from the Cambridge side around 11:26 a.m. and used the left-hand lane to avoid the new chicane put in place earlier this month. The driver continued toward the Notch but used one of the new parking areas to turn around and head back down about 15 minutes later.

Newbury man arrested for assaulting firefighters at scene

A Newbury man was taken into custody on May 14 after attempting to assault firefighters responding to a fire at his residence. Vermont State Police responded to a call at approximately 8:18 p.m. regarding a male attempting to assault firefighters with a stick. Upon arrival at the scene, troopers made contact with Edward Rose, 33, who was reportedly aggressive towards members of the Wells River Fire Department. Investigations confirmed that Rose had been trying to impede the firefighting efforts by threatening the first responders. He was arrested and brought to the St. Johnsbury Barracks for processing. Rose has been cited to appear in Orange County Court on June 19 at 8:30 a.m. to face charges of Assault on Protected Professionals.
