Firefighters battled a blaze Friday night off Highway 12 in Yakima that threatened Washington Fruit and Produce Company fruit bins and a nearby home.
Several fire agencies responded just before 9 p.m. to reports of a fire near the Yakima Greenway, westbound on the highway near the 16th Avenue exit.
Arriving firefighters found that the fire was actually located near the eastbound lanes on the other side of the highway, according to Yakima Fire Shift Commander Tom Schneider.
Schneider says the initial 15 minutes were the most difficult, with a heavy breeze causing the fire to spread both east and west in the grassy area off the side of the highway.
The priority for firefighters initially was to keep the piles of fruit bins nearby from catching fire. Schneider says there may be damage to some bins, but that the majority escaped unharmed.
At one point, part of a nearby home caught fire but firefighters were able to tackle it quickly, leaving the house with minimum damage, Schneider said.
