Four separate fires in the Cheney area, which were sparked by lightning on the night of Tuesday, July 23, were fully contained Sunday morning. Because of their close proximity, the fires were labeled the Cheney Complex Fire. It was estimated the four fires burned a combined total of 171 acres, or about a quarter mile. Two hundred firefighters from various agencies worked throughout the week to gain control of the fires and protect homes in the area. All evacuation orders were lifted Friday but the fires were not yet officially contained. Sunday morning, it was announced full containment had been reached and crews would begin heading home. In a release, the incident management team said it "[wished] to express our sincere appreciation for the support given to our efforts by the community of Cheney and surrounding areas."
