Two locals who played a major role assisting with the University of Washington bus crash were recognized by the Red Cross. Grant County Fire District 3 Deputy Chief of Operations Tony Leibelt and his wife Carol Leibelt were nominated for the 2019 Red Cross Hometown Heroes Award. Chief Leibelt and Carol were nominated by Quincy School District Superintendent John Boyd. The Hometown Heroes Award recognizes individuals who have performed a heroic act or who have made a significant positive change to those around them. Chief Leibelt and Carol played a massive part in the quick and effective response concerning the University of Washington charter bus crash on Thanksgiving evening last November. Chief Leibelt's engine was the first on scene to mitigate the mass casualty incident, fire officials stated.
