A fire broke out west of Cheney Wednesday afternoon. Because the flames were so close to homes, it triggered a massive response.
As two planes dropped water on the fast moving flames, and crews on the ground worked to contain the blaze, law enforcement from Cheney and Spokane County went door-to-door telling people they needed to leave right away.
A man KHQ spoke with said he was unaware the fire was just yards away from his home until a police officer pounded on his door and told him to get out.
Thanks to firefighters quick response, no buildings were damaged. The fire was contained to about 17.5 acres.
Crews plan to remain on scene monitoring for hot spots.
