Elderly people escaped after a fast-moving fire broke out inside a detached garage in Kennewick early Friday morning.
According to Battalion Chief Tod Kreutz with the Kennewick Fire Department, the fire was first reported around 1:15 a.m. near Perry Street and Kennewick Avenue.
It sparked inside a garage attached to an apartment where no one was living at the time. Firefighters arrived and were able to get the elderly people living next door to safety.
They say there was extensive damage to the garage, about $20,000 worth, and smoke damage to the apartment. Firefighters are still investigating the cause.
Battalion Chief Kreutz added that wind made the fire move quickly, and recommends that residents make sure they have working smoke detectors installed in their homes.
