Spokane Fire crews rescued a man who got caught in the current of the Spokane River on Wednesday afternoon. Crews were dispatched to the Sandifur Bridger near People’s Park around 4:30 p.m. The man was in the river, roughly 25 feet from the north bank. The man was pinned by the force of the river against partially submerged trees. The fast-flowing current made a shore-based rescue impossible, so the water rescue team launched a boat from the TJ Meenach area and traveled upriver to rescue him. The man said he was in an inner tuber near the shore when the tube was grabbed by the current that swept him up against the trees. He was not wearing a life jacket and could not swim, firefighters said.
