An investigation is underway into just how many local victims there are regarding fraudulent unemployment claims. It’s an elaborate scheme where criminals steal your name and social security number, and file for benefits. “We have enough worries going on with this virus right now and that there are people out there trying to scam the systems, scam people, scam the state,” said Fire Chief Noel Hardin, Asotin County Fire District #1. Fire Chief Noel Hardin is talking about the current unemployment fraud scam. A multi-million-dollar scheme being investigated by the Secret Service, targeting the unemployment insurance system. CBS News reports it’s led by a criminal organization with ties to Nigeria. “That concerns me in the fact that people need this service, I don't,” Hardin said.
