An early-morning fire Tuesday burned a significant portion of the Lake McMurray fire station, leaving staff looking for a way to continue to provide service to residents of Skagit County Fire District 15. Staff were working Tuesday evening to draft a plan for call response. The department should be able to respond to emergency calls after Tuesday evening, said Fire Chief Stuart Kranick. But with equipment such as fire trucks scattered at several homes in the area, including Kranick’s and a neighbor’s, it’s possible response times may be longer. Kranick said the fire started about 3 a.m. in a portable toilet outside the station that was on hand because of a frozen pipe that burst in January. The portable toilet was for use during the plumbing repairs. Kranick said the fire started in the portable toilet before spreading to the back wall of the station, the eaves and attic. The fire was likely caused by a person.
