After the Maui wildfires, the State House of Representatives formed six interim working groups to make recommendations on topics like housing, wildfire prevention, and schools. The school’s working group came up with nine recommendations for the Department of Education. One of the suggestions stated that the DOE should assess school evacuation routes. In response, the DOE said it’s completing an inventory of the number of routes out of all school campuses and out of the school’s community.
It will work with other agencies to determine alternate routes for schools with limited exits.
“Our schools need to look at emergency routes but also what role they play in an emergency,” said Rep. Darius Kila (D) House Wildfire Prevention Working Group Co-Chair.
