PHOTO: Wildfire Prevention Awareness Week is here and the Maine Forest Service kicked it off with the unveiling of a new Smokey Bear statue Tuesday. The six-foot-tall bear was dedicated to the Hampden North Visitor Center off I-95 and is now the third statue of its kind in the state. For the past 80 years, Smokey Bear has been a symbol of fire safety. Wildfire awareness week comes during the height of wildfire season as 65% of Maine's wildfires start in the spring. According to the Deputy Commissioner of the Maine Department of Agriculture Conservation & Forestry, Nancy McBrady, Maine is the most forested state with 17.5 million acres of forest land. McBrady says it is vital we take the proper steps to protect it.
