The shooting death of an Appleton firefighter was one of the biggest local stories in 2019. Firefighter Mitch Lundgaard was killed, after going on a medical call at the transit center. Police Officer Paul Christensen and bystander Brittany Schowalter were wounded during a shootout with the suspect, 47-year-old Ruben Houston. Houston was revived using Narcan, and police later shot and killed him. Police Officer Meghan Cash read a statement from the family at Lundgaard’s funeral. It says Lundgaard swore to serve the community, helping people, and he died doing that. The family says part of the community was taken when he was killed. There was an outpouring of community support for the Lundgaard family, through donations. Thousands lined streets for the funeral processions.
