Firefighters with muscles, and puppies, in a calendar.
This is how Milwaukee Fire Department members are raising tens of thousands of dollars to help firefighters during times of need.
Two years ago Ignite the Spirit-Milwaukee launched as a nonprofit organization that supports firefighters when they can't be at work for family or personal health reasons.
The organization was founded after a handful of tragedies hit the Milwaukee firefighter community in 2017, including the death of Lt. Kristin Ciganek-Schroeder after a five-year battle with colon cancer.
"I left that funeral with this notion that there were so many people in the community who were there to support the firefighter, and I thought it would be good to find a way to support more firefighters," said Joe Flick, president of Ignite the Spirit-Milwaukee.
The organization, made up entirely of City of Milwaukee firefighters, caught the public's attention thanks to its 2019 firefighter calendar.
