Crews from agencies around La Crosse County worked well into the night to extinguish a barn fire on Highway 33.
Town of Shelby Assistant Chief Tony Holinka told News 19 that his department answered the call to W2840 Hwy. 33 at 4:15 Wednesday afternoon. Upon arrival, Holinka said they found the barn fully-engulfed in flames, with "flames as high as the corn silo."
With help from La Crosse Fire, Onalaska, Holmen, Campbell, Stoddard, Coon Valley and West Salem as well as the county sheriff's department and Tri-State, firefighters put out the flames by about 9 pm. Holinka added that one of the farm's neighbors, Don Hess, volunteered his excavator to remove the debris while crew put out hot-spots.
Holinka said no one was injured in the blaze, and no animals were harmed. The barn was mostly empty, save for a few tools. The structure is a total loss.
