While assisting the Cudahy Fire Department with a deadly fire at Lake Shore Tower Apartments early Aug. 16, the South Milwaukee Fire Department also helped save a swimmer in Lake Michigan too tired to make it back to shore. While crews were assisting with the multi-alarm fire, other South Milwaukee Fire Department personnel rescued an exhausted swimmer from Lake Michigan that got caught up in rip currents, according to a statement from the department. South Milwaukee’s rescue boat located the 64-year-old female swimmer and brought her to the South Milwaukee Yacht Club where she was evaluated by Emergency Medical Services. The woman was taken to a local hospital, according to the department. South Milwaukee Fire Chief Joe Knitter said she was treated for weakness and exhaustion and was released from St. Luke's South Shore hospital.
