The Madison Fire Department responded to a structure fire on Madison’s west side Sunday morning, according to a firefighter at the scene.
The homeowner, Donna Gray, said she and her husband were relaxing by the fireplace this morning when she started to smell smoke. After realizing it wasn’t coming from the fireplace, her husband searched the house but couldn’t find where it was coming from. Then he opened the garage door.
“All the sudden woosh! The smoke poured in like crazy,” Gray said. “He closed the door quickly and we called 911.”
Gray said dispatch operators told her to leave the house. She said multiple units arrived in practically seconds.
Investigators are still determining what caused the fire. The garage door and personal belongings were damaged, according to Dane County Public Safety communications supervisor Kirstin Alsaker.
