The Madison Fire Department helped put out an illegal backyard bonfire early Sunday morning that reached 10 feet in diameter with flames up to six-feet high. According to a daily report, the Madison Fire Department responded to the bonfire around 12:15 a.m. on Lathrop Street that had a “notable glow” coming from the backyard. Firefighters said there were three people in the backyard. Fire crews reportedly asked the individuals to get a nearby garden hose and put out the fire. Madison Fire noted there were several objects burning in the center of the bonfire, including a small fire pit and an unidentifiable melted plastic item. Firefighters also reported a 8-foot log that was in the fire was way too big to fit in the 3-foot bowl of the fire pit. MFD gave the three people a copy of the City of Madison Outdoor and Open Burning ordinance and told them which violations the group had made.
