Milwaukee firefighters battled a fire in the historic Colby-Abbot building near N. Milwaukee Street and E. Mason Street Sunday morning, June 7 around 4:15 a.m. Crews found the building fully engulfed in flames and increased the initial two-alarm response to a three-alarm response. A defensive approach was used to get the fire under control just before 7 a.m. There were no injuries reported. It wasn’t immediately clear how much damage was caused by the fire, but investigators said they found a partial structural collapse of the building. Officials could not elaborate given the ongoing investigation — but did say fire ripped through pretty much the whole building and caused some damage to neighboring buildings. Service was temporarily suspended for the Hop streetcar due to the route location and the response to the fire.
