VIDEO: Wood County Sheriff's Department say that shortly after noon on Monday, an individual reported a fire in a ditch with a person down in the fire.
The fire was located at CTH A at Marshfield Road in Marshfield.
Police say upon arrival, they located a 79-year-old man dead in the burn area.
Police say in a press release they believe the man tending to the fire when he "suffered an unknown issue and succumbed to the fire."
The state has been plagued by wildfires, already more than 320 reported this year alone.
"We have very high fire risk throughout the entire state which is somewhat unusual to see that level of elevated risk throughout the state," said Amy Luebke, a forestry specialist with the DNR.
An extremely dry winter has lead to the early onset of the usual fire season in our state. DNR officials say it could last a little longer than normal.
