An upcoming day of home fire safety will help people in La Crosse stay safe. On May 8th, the La Crosse Fire Department and American Red Cross will partner to help educate community members about fire safety. It’s part of a national ‘Sound the Alarm’ effort. Volunteers will meet with residents by appointment outside their homes to share fire safety information. They will also help them create an escape plan. Free smoke alarms will also be installed for anyone that requests them. When seconds matter, being prepared could save a life. “Most folks don’t realize that you only have two minutes to get out of your home when you have a home fire. So that we want to make sure that folks have a good working smoke alarm and they have a plan on how to get out,” said American Red Cross of southwest Wisconsin executive director Kyle Kriegl.
