A downtown restaurant temporarily shut down over the weekend after a laundry fire broke out in the restaurant’s basement. Madison firefighters responded to the 100 block of South Butler Street shortly before 5 p.m. Friday for a report of a basement fire. When they arrived, crews found a clothes dryer and the items around it on fire. Firefighters with Engine 3 used a handheld water extinguisher, but it wasn’t enough to extinguish the fire. Crews then routed additional water supply to the basement that was used to put out the fire. One of the building’s occupants reported she stepped out of the laundry room and found smoke coming from the dryer when she returned.
