Two people were killed and another was injured in a two-vehicle crash caused at about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday when a turkey hit a car on State Hwy. 56 at Venner Hollow Road in the town of Genoa.
After the turkey hit the front of a 2007 Ford Escape, the driver lost control, skidded into the ditch and back across the center line, where it struck a 2011 Dodge pickup head-on, according to the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office.
The two occupants of the Escape, whom the sheriff’s office identified as Genoa residents, were extricated from the vehicle and pronounced dead by the Vernon County Coroner’s Office. Gundersen Tri-State Ambulance took the pickup driver, who is from West Salem, to Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the sheriff’s office.
All three individuals were wearing seatbelts and airbags deployed, according to the sheriff’s office, which withheld names pending notification of relatives.
