The former home of the Southside Senior Citizen Center the former La Crosse Fire Station No. 5 has joined the ranks of the National Register of Historic Places. The Wisconsin Historical Society announced Thursday that the building at 1220 Denton Street on La Crosse’s south side has been added to the registry. Fire Station No. 5 was built in 1895 to provide fire protection to La Crosse. “Fire Station No. 5 is the earliest and longest-serving fire station in La Crosse. It represents the transition from horse-drawn engines to motor vehicles, reflecting successive eras in firefighting,” said the press release. Most recently, the building housed the Southside Senior Citizen Center before the city moved its senior citizen programming to the former La Crosse Footwear building on St. Andrew Street.
