Wausau Fire Department proposed a plan to add 12 new firefighters by 2024. They presented the plan to the City's Human Resources Committee Monday night where it was approved. Wausau Fire Chief, Bob Barteck said the department has not changed its employee requirements since 1970 and needs a major update. In just 10 minutes of News 9 onsite for an interview, calls for two ambulance emergencies were made. After those two calls, only one ambulance was left to respond in the city. The Chief said it was a perfect example of why they need extra help. He said a dozen new firefighters would cover the tremendous increase in call volume and give a more leeway for workers to take off.
