A La Crosse kindergartener is being hailed a hero for helping his family safely escape a house fire.
There is no shortage of super heroes in the Cochrane family home, but Liam Cochrane’s super power saved his family’s life. “I just used my sense of smell.”, says the 6 year old.
Liam was the first to smell the smoke coming from his basement. “I was just peeking out for one second and I noticed the smoke was green.” The Emerson student grabbed his little brother and headed to his parent’s room. “Liam shouted it stinks in here.”, recalls Laura Cochrane. The family ran out the front door. The fire not far behind. “The fire alarm on the main floor was going off. About a minute after he woke us up, the one upstairs went off too.”, says Cochrane.
Firefighters say Liam’s warning, before the smoke alarm’s, gave his family the time they needed to safely escape. “Liam exemplified this, doing exactly what he was supposed to do, recognizing that something was not right.”, says Assist. Fire Chief Craig Snyder.
