Two dogs perished in a house fire reported shortly after 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Onalaska Fire Department.
Onalaska firefighters responded to a report of smoke coming from a neighbor’s house in the 400 block of Fifth Avenue North, according to a department news release.
Smoke was coming from the eaves, and windows were charred and cracking, the report says. Onalaska firefighters forced open to front door to extinguish flames on the inside, while other firefighters from Onalaska and Holmen deployed to pull ceilings and check whether the fire had spread.
The blaze was extinguished at about 12:45, according to the release.
La Crosse Fire Department unit was on the scene on standby, while Gundersen Tri-State Ambulance, Xcel Energy and the Onalaska Police Department also responded.
Two dogs were found deceased at the scene, but no other injuries were reported. The homeowner was not home at the time, and the cause of the fire is being investigated.
