The city was growing and needed additional fire protection in the 1890s. There were calls made to build a second fire station.
Back in October 1892, according to a newspaper clipping from the 1890s provided by Katie Reilly of the Sheboygan County Historical Research Center, the city decided that a new fire department house would be built by the city on the south side of the river. That new building would be built at the northwest corner of S. 14th Street and Indiana Avenue and become known as Sheboygan Fire Company No. 2.
The city entered a contract with Schutz and Warnecke for a new firehouse. The building alone cost $3,648, which according to an online calculator is valued at $104,247 today. The heating system, appliances and equipment needed for the horse-drawn fire department would all be extra. The article said it was expensive, but it would serve the city for many years.
