Don't let the green leaves on the trees fool you. Wisconsin is still facing drier-than-normal conditions, making wildfires more of a risk, and there are steps people can take to avoid inadvertently sparking one.
Some areas of the state have seen rainfalls seven inches below average this year, said Marc Sass, a forester with the Department of Natural Resources.
Even with rain falling Thursday evening in several areas of the state, the risk remains high for wildfires sparking and spreading.
"We are happy with our little bit of rain we got last night, but we need more coming," Sass said.
So far this year, 797 fires have burned throughout the state, according to the DNR's wildfire activity tracker. Those fires have burned nearly 2,000 acres.
