The Rhinelander Fire Department started Tuesday with an unusual patient: a trapped deer.
After receiving a call in the morning that a deer had fallen through the ice on Boom Lake in Oneida County, on the portion of ice that branches out toward the Wisconsin River, Scott Rathbun Jr. geared up to rescue the trapped animal.
"We didn't want to leave it out there," Rathbun Jr., a lieutenant with the fire department, told USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin. "It obviously wasn't going to get out on its own." Rhinelander Fire Fighters Local 1028 posted a video Tuesday afternoon of the rescue, advising anyone who sees an animal or human fall through ice to call 911 for help.
