Portage firefighters put out a fire in a motel room Monday evening before it was able to spread to any of the adjacent rooms. First responders were dispatched to the Sunset Motel at 2617 New Pinery Rd. shortly before 6:30 p.m. for a report of a fire in one of the rooms. When they arrived, crews found smoke coming from room 4. The room was being rented at the time, but the renters were not there. Fire officials said motel management evacuated the side of the motel where the fire was and used fire extinguishers to help subdue the fire. Firefighters were able to immediately contain the fire when they arrived, according to a news release. No injuries were reported. The fire is still under investigation by the Portage Fire Department and the Portage Police Department.
