The La Crosse Fire Department has teamed up with the American Red Cross to make sure the people of the community are safe from fires. In a national campaign called “Sound the Alarm. Save a Life,” the fire department and Red Cross are providing in=person home fire education and resources. In some cases, they are even installing free smoke alarms. The La Crosse fire chief says non-functioning smoke alarms have been a big problem within the community. “Well certainty through our community risk assessment a number of fires that we’ve seen over the last few years a lot of times there is either broken smoke detectors or smoke alarms without batteries in them,” Fire Chief Ken Gilliam said. “It’s certainty a concern when there is alarms but they’re not functioning.”
