A new study shows Fire and EMS agencies across the state are struggling to maintain appropriate service levels in the face of numerous challenges.
A local fire department says those findings ring true here in the Chippewa Valley.
The Wisconsin Policy Forum studied 30 Fire and EMS providers throughout the state. Their report shows that nearly 93% of Wisconsin fire departments are volunteer or mostly volunteer-run.
Researchers found many of these agencies are facing higher call volumes, recruitment and retention issues, and that while consolidation may be beneficial, the odds are against it in most cases. Augusta-Bridge Creek fire chief Ken Zich said they normally respond to 280 calls a year. With two months still left, they've already had 270.
