Work is officially underway on La Crosse’s new fire station. The department broke ground on Fire Station No. 2 on Monday.
The station, on La Crosse street near the UW-La Crosse campus, is the city’s first new fire station in 55 years.
Station 2 not only will house a crew but also will be the department’s new headquarters.
City leaders say this project has been a long time coming, but they are happy with how quickly it came together.
“It’s on the edge of unbelievable,” said Doug Happel, the Common Council member who chairs the Police and Fire Commission. “You know how fast government works — or does not work — and it’s just amazing that the city of La Crosse was able to accomplish this within five years. That is almost unheard of in the government world.”
City leaders say they hope to wrap up construction in early 2023.
