Falls were the most common form of injury for individuals ages 70 or older last year. That’s according to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services. The Rhinelander Fire Department says elderly individuals falling is one of the most common 911 calls the department receives. Lieutenant Paramedic Adam Johnson says some falls just involve helping the individual back into a sitting or standing position. Other calls involve injuries. Johnson says during the winter months he sees a higher number of calls. Things like snow and ice increase the risk of someone falling. Other risks are easy to fix. “Some preventative measures are quite easy to fix," said Johnson. "Well-lit conditions, not having obstructions in your walkways such as extension cords or excessive clutter. Certain floor mats or rugs can kind of be a trip hazard.”
