Spring in Wisconsin is wildfire season, and most people don’t realize is that 98% of wildfires in Wisconsin are due to human activity. "This is not uncommon, typically after the snow melts and prior to vegetation greening up, that’s the peak of fire season," said Catherine Koele. Catherine Koele is a DNR Wildfire Prevention Specialist for Woodruff, she said when you are out burning, it’s all about safety. "So the key to safe burning is to know what the fire danger is and to obtain proper burning permits, and follow all of the restrictions on the permit before burning," she said. "So we encourage folks to really pay attention to the area around your burn pile, make sure that it is free of flammable material and overhanging branches," said Koele. There are certain materials you can burn and certain materials you can’t. "Leaves, brush, pine needles, vegetative materials. Obviously, we don’t encourage any sort of trash burning," said Catherine.
