The Eau Claire Fire Department is showing how its fighting fires without spreading harmful chemicals.
Firefighters say the suppressant, known as F-500 is an environmentally friendly encapsulator agent.
This means though it can put out many types of fires effectively. It doesn’t have harmful man-made chemicals known as P-FAS, like its predecessors. For certain fires, firefighters need a more powerful compound than water to put out the inferno.
Deputy Chief Allyn Bertrang of Eau Claire Fire and Rescue said, “It’s an agent that’s able to encapsulate the molecules and works very well in a lot of different ways. Also works well as a cooling agent as we talked about during our demonstration. And that’s how it works in many applications to draw out the heat and the fire is extinguished in that way.”
