VIDEO: The Stevens Point Fire Department is warning about the dangers of oxygen-related fires, in light of several fires involving smoking.
They released an educational video aimed at saving lives and property, saying these types of fires are avoidable.
"Everybody still has that one family member or maybe you're a smoker at home, and we're just trying to get out to these people that it's not an if, it's a when or if you're injured or killed if you're smoking with your oxygen on," said Stevens Point Fire Marshal Drew Egan.
When exposed to oxygen from a tank, which consists of four times the amount of oxygen in the air, a cigarette will burn more easily, which can then spread to clothes and other items if left untreated. Those fires can often be devastating, and hard for firefighters to fight.
